Wordle Solver

This Wordle solver is a 5 letter word solver built for Wordle clues. Enter the colors from your guesses so far, and it lists every word that still fits, most likely answers first, with the guess that narrows things down fastest.

    How to enter your clues

    1. Green tiles: type each green letter into the box for its spot.
    2. Yellow tiles: type each yellow letter into the yellow box for the spot where you guessed it. If a letter was yellow in two different spots, put it in both boxes.
    3. Grey tiles: type every grey letter into the grey field. If a letter shows grey and green in the same guess (because you typed it twice), only mark it green.

The list updates as you type. When fewer than 400 common words are left, the solver shows the best next guesses. Tap one to see how many answers it would leave on average and in the worst case.

    A worked example

Here is a real game played with this solver. The answer is WHICH. Every guess after the first is the solver's top suggestion.

Guess 1: RAISE I is green, and the rest are grey. 44 common words still fit.

Guess 2: CLING I is green and C is yellow, and the rest are grey. 4 common words still fit: which, quick, thick and juicy.

Guess 3: QUICK I and C are green, and the rest are grey. 1 common word still fits: which.

Guess 4: WHICH Solved in 4.

Notice that the second and third guesses aren't trying to win. They're chosen to split the remaining words as evenly as possible, so that whatever colors come back, very few answers are left.

    How well the solver does

We played every one of our 1,787 common 5 letter words as if it were the answer, opening with RAISE and then always taking the solver's first suggestion. It needed 3.50 guesses on average and solved 54% of words in three guesses or fewer, and 91% in four or fewer.

The hardest answers are words that differ by a single letter from several others, like the -ATCH or -IGHT families. When the solver gets down to a handful of these, it has to guess. In your own games, if you see that pattern coming, spend a guess on a word that tests several of the possible first letters at once.

Tips the solver can't give you

    • Hard mode: in Wordle's hard mode, every guess must use the green and yellow letters you've found. The solver's suggestions are always words that still fit your clues, so they work in hard mode too.
    • Plurals are rare answers: Wordle almost never uses plurals or past tenses as answers. The solver lists common words first for this reason.
    • Repeated letters: if a yellow letter won't fit anywhere, it may appear twice. Words like SPEED, LLAMA and MAMMA catch many players.
    • Other lengths: for 4 or 6 letter Wordle-style games, use the 4 letter or 6 letter finder, which have the same clue boxes.

Not sure where to start? RAISE is our best-tested first guess. You can also use the 5 letter word finder to unscramble letters or browse word lists.

    Questions people ask

How does the Wordle solver work?

It checks every 5 letter word against your clues: green letters must be in that exact spot, yellow letters must be in the word but not in the spot you tried, and grey letters must not appear. Common words are listed first, because Wordle answers are everyday words.

How are the "best next guesses" chosen?

For each remaining common word, the solver works out every green, yellow and grey pattern it could produce against the other possible answers. The words that leave the fewest answers on average are suggested.

How well does the solver do?

We played every one of our 1,787 common 5 letter words using only the solver's suggestions and RAISE as the first guess. It took 3.50 guesses on average, solved 54% in three guesses or fewer, and solved 99% within Wordle's six guesses.

Is a Wordle helper the same as a Wordle cheat?

That depends on how you play. Many people use a Wordle helper after they get stuck, or afterwards to check their reasoning. Looking at the "best next guesses" is a good way to learn which guesses give the most information.

Is there a 6 letter Wordle solver?

Yes. The 6 letter word finder has the same green, yellow and grey boxes, and so does the 4 letter word finder. They work for any Wordle-style game of that length.

Can I use it as a fill in the blank word solver?

Yes. Put the letters you know into the green boxes, in their spots, and leave the rest empty. The list shows every word that fits the pattern.

What should my first Wordle guess be?

In our test of 1,222 starting words, raise left the fewest possible answers, about 44.6 on average. See the full ranking.

    What happens with double letters?

If a letter appears twice in your guess but only once in the answer, Wordle colors one copy and greys the other. In the solver, mark the colored copy and leave the letter out of the grey field. 32% of common 5 letter words repeat a letter, so double letters come up often.
